Aloha and Welcome to Maui Scribe Quarterly!
Dedicated to those with a passion for creative writing and readers of same,
Maui Scribe Quarterly is a new forum for poetry, essays, and short-stories borne from the minds of Maui writers. MSQ will feature works by aspiring and established writers on the Island of Maui.
MSQ Magazine will publish [abridged] versions of lengthier works, while the unabridged versions of those works will appear on this site, the companion online edition: MauiScribe.com. The free quarterly publication will be widely distributed in West, South, and Central Maui, with future plans for distribution in Upcountry and East Maui. Copies of the publication will also be distributed to the libraries of middle and high schools as well.
The printed and online versions of MSQ will be great opportunities for previously-unpublished writers to have their works read by a wider audience. It is not unlikely that copies of Maui Scribe Quarterly (...and this site) could conceivably find their way into the hands of book publishers, agents, and movie producers.
Open to writers of all ages, the only qualification for submitting works is that writers are required to reside on Maui at least six months each year. [Local mailing address, phone number, and email address must accompany all submissions and are subject to verification prior to works being published].
Writers under the age of 18 must include a [signed] parental consent form accompanying their submissions. [Form appears on this website]. Students submitting works for consideration should also include the name of the Maui school they attend.
Contributors to Maui Scribe Quarterly/MauiScribe.com will be eligible to win cash prizes during the publication's annual awards celebration recognizing the Island's outstanding writing talents.
This event will be cross-promoted among other newspapers and radio stations on the Island. [Details of this annual event will be forthcoming on this site].
The publication & site are expected to be well-received and widely-read by residents and visitors to Maui, with many copies likely to find their way back to the mainland and around the world in the suitcases of visitors wanting to take home some of the thoughts, emotions, and imaginations of those who call Maui 'home'.
The planned launch date for the inaugural edition of Maui Scribe Quarterly is
January 2011. Contributors wishing to have their works considered for publication for the debut issue must submit their works by September 15th. Submissions received after this date will be considered for future editions.
Though MSQ will not pay writers for works it chooses to publish, writers retain full copyright of their works and are eligible to receive cash prizes during the publication's annual awards event.
Maui Scribe Quarterly and MauiScribe.com do not guarantee publishing of any submitted works. MSQ and MauiScribe.com reserve the right to edit all contributions as we see fit, and also reserve the right to not publish works we deem offensive. Neither MSQ nor MauiScribe.com will be held responsible for works lost in the mail and cannot return submissions. As such, contributors should only submit their work as PDF files to: mauiscribe@yahoo.com. [Please write the word 'Submission' on the subject line of your email to us with a PDF file of your work as an attachment]. Please be sure to include the completed Release Form which can be emailed or mailed to the address on the form.
While MSQ Magazine will be printed in English, we welcome works in English, Hawaiian, Tongan, Samoan, Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Esperanto, and any other language for MauiScribe.com.
